COD UPDATE NJ AND NY Local Cod Fishing News

Viking

The Viking Fleet has added extra Cod trips to our schedule. We are sailing (weather permitting) daily at 3am from Jan 11 through Jan 17. The cost is $110 per person and we are currently taking reservations.

Big Jamaica

Cod – Pollock – Hake - Jumbo Porgies
We finally made it offshore and had a good showing of cod and jumbo pollock up to 40LBS. There were also some ling and hake mixed in. The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail offshore on Friday’s, Saturday’s, and Sunday’s during January and February. We will be fishing for Cod, Pollock, Hake, and Jumbo Porgies.
The pool winners were:
Jason Hatt from Denver, Co with a 40LB Pollock,
Jimmy Ricardo from Pittstown, NJ with a 35LB pollock

The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail to the offshore wrecks on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through January and February.

Gambler

GAMBLER cod/pollock/ling trip thursday

Overall, good fishing. Some real nice cod up to 30+ lbs, pollock 12lbs, big ling and even some keeper blackfish. Just a handful of guys to enjoy the trip.
It was a little bouncy in the moring but the Gambler sat like a duck in it.
I tried jigging for pollock and cod but didn't catch.
Clams worked best.
Dog fish weren't too bad
Kip Tobish of PA won the pool with a brut 30 or 35lber and a 20+ lber and some fat ling.
Billy Byrne of Toms River caught a 10lb cod, 16 big ling, a keeper blackfish and a couple silver eels.

Codfishing Mixed reports

Codfishing reports from the Block Island area were mixed over the last few days. Some boats got them, some didn't. You just had to be on a pile of fish that was feeding and if you weren't it was tough fishing.

There was a strong current on Saturday making it difficult to drift.

Wreckfishing for Cod(20-40 mile wrecks) locally off Point Pleasant, NJ was good on Saturday with the Gambler, Point Plesant, NJ reporting a good catch of Cod. Most anglers had a few keeper cod and some had 5-7 fish with fish up to 20 pounds or so.

Montauk Codfishing Update 1/29/10 BE PREPARED!

Codfishing slowed up off Block Island the past few days. The full moon tends to effect the bite and It appears the moon is having an effect on the fishing now. Fishing should improve after this on the down side next week. Make your reservations now so you don't miss out.

Over the past month good catches have been made but reports have been inconsistent as well. Sometimes bait is better and other times jigs work best depending on what the cod are feeding on. Be prepared for both and change your strategy as conditions warrant. Listen to the captain and watch the mates and anglers who are catching. Be prepared to adapt and you will succeed.

Don't waste the Cod!!!

Codfishing remains very good out of Montauk and R.I. The cod are building up off Block Island and limit catches have been reported.****Please don't waste the codfish*****Some of the fish over the past few years have had "worms" in the flesh. These are common and are harmless to humans when cooked properly or frozen. They can also be easily removed by shining a light through the fillet and removing them with a sharp pointy knife. If this still bothers you, e-mail me and I will take them. Here is a link regarding the cod worm.

COD UPDATE 1/18/10

The Viking fleet of Montauk, reported great codfishing on the 19th as well as the 17th. Limits were had by 11:30 on the 19th and it seems the fish are larger with cod up to 35lbs landed.

The Voyager of Point Pleasant reported cod up to 20lbs and limit catches of porgies on the Sat. off shore trip. Some fisherman caught two Cod, some had 12 to 15 ling. Not bad overall.

The Big Jamaica of Brielle reported Friday offshore trip was good. They caught Pollock up to 30LBS, cod up to 25LBS, plenty of jumbo porgies, and some ling. Everyone on board had a good catch of fish. Some of the cod and pollock were caught on jigs and the rest on clams. The Saturday report was similar.

DAILY COD FISHING UPDATE 1/14

Cod fishing remains good in Montauk NY. Local Cod reports from the Viking Fleet were good on Wednesday the 13th with most anglers having their limit.

The Big Jamaica out of Brielle NJ reported a good catch on their offshore trip on 1/10. The trip produced some nice Pollock, cod, jumbo porgies, and ling. The Pollock weighed up to 30LBS and the cod weighed up to 25LBS. They also caught a good amount of jumbo porgies and some ling.

The Voyager out of Point Pleasant reported similar results on their Sunday trip with COD up to 25lbs, and some Hake, Big Porgies and Big Pollock to 30lbs.
